Dear Neighbors,

Last night, over 100 47th Ward residents joined me for a Board of Review workshop with Commissioner Berrios’ staff to discuss how to appeal property tax assessments.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents who attended this important meeting.  I strongly believe that every property owner in the 47th Ward should submit an appeal to the Board of Review.

As you know, the Cook County Board of Review is now accepting appeals for residents living in the Lakeview Township.  In the 47th Ward, all properties located east of Western Avenue are in the Lakeview Township.  The deadline to file your appeal with the Board of Review is February 22, 2010. Appeal forms are available at my office.  You can also drop off your appeal form to my office by Friday, February 19, 2010 by 5:00 pm.

In collaboration with Commissioner Berrios, I will be sponsoring one more workshop to assist residents in filing their Real Estate Assessed Valuation Complaint Form.

Howl-O-Ween 2009 Winners!

[added video  and additional photos link on the bottom of post on 12-19-2009]

It was a bit windy but the sun shone again on this year’s Howl-O-Ween—our fifth year.  Fifty-four dogs were entered in the costume contest—the same as last year. As always, the creativity was amazing.  Emcee Ben Hollis kept things hopping with a lively and humorous commentary.  There were great prizes for the costume contest winners and an abundance of raffle prizes.  It wouldn’t have happened without our volunteers.

A huge thanks to everyone who pitched in—and to our sponsors The Bow Wow Lounge, 1744 W. Winona, and The Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark, and others who contributed cash and fabulous raffle prizes: Andersonville’s Uptown Animal Hospital, 5420 N. Clark, The Barking Lot, 2442 W. Irving Park, Call of the Wild School for Dogs, 3027 N. Rockwell, Famous Fido’s Doggie Deli & Happy Tails, 5430 N. Clark, Painted Light Photos, 1742 W. Balmoral, and Ruff ‘N’ Stuff Pet Center, 5430 N. Clark.  Thanks also to the 1776 W. Winnemac Condo Association for letting us use their lovely park again.

Check out the fun photos taken by our resident photographer Erich Schrempp.

Committee Reports
Social: Linda Wallace reported that the  ASNA block party was a success.  She would like to thank all of those who volunteered.  About 100 people attended and suggestions were solicited for any changes for next year.  Suggestions were:  closing off the block earlier in the day, more water and less soda, more food, invite the mounted police back, and add recycling bins.  Other suggestions were:  more activity booths, a crafts table, water ballons, a piñata, dunk tank, petting zoo.  Not all suggestions will be feasible, but additional input is welcome at coming meetings.  The block party moves back to Winona next year.    The annual Howloween costume contest for dogs and their people is set for Saturday, October 31st.  Set up is at 11:30 am, registration begins at 12:30 pm, parade and judging begins at 1:30 pm.  The location is the same:  the SE corner of Carmen and Ravenswood.  Ben Hollis will be the MC.  It was suggested that we get more donut holes, as they went pretty quickly last year.  John moved to approve $1000 for Howloween spending.  Ben seconded and the motion passed.
Membership: Membership renewal time.  We currently have 36 active ASNA members.  Please let Linda Wallace know if new neighbors move into your block so we can arrange a welcome packet with ASNA info.
Greening: Cleanup along the Ravenswood parkway continues.  It is scheduled for the second Saturday of each month at 9 am.  Dates are posted on the ASNA website.  Julia Bunn announced that some additional native species have been added to the Ravenswood parkway, and was happy to say that a Catbird was recently spotted.  She suggested a $50 donation for the Nature Conservancy membership and a Nature Conservancy designation & plaque for the parkway.  Linda moved to approve the expenditure, Ben seconded and the motion was approved.

New Business
The fall newsletter is coming up and neighbors are encouraged to write about their favorite local businesses.  Julia Bunn will write about the Nature Conservancy.
Christmas caroling is planned for either December 13th or 20th, date to be determined.
The sewer cap in front of 1660 Carmen remains unfinished after 3 months.  Neighbors are encouraged to contact Streets & Sanitation and the alderman’s office to encourage completion.

The next meeting is at 1706 W Carmen (the home of Noel Suarez on 9/14 at 7:00 pm.
John moved to adjourn at 8:00 pm.
