Stay Safe!

Chicago Police are warning of a series of recent armed robberies that have taken place during the early evening hours inside garages just east of our neighborhood. The robbers have entered the garages while the victims were pulling in to park their cars, police said. Be aware of other vehicles in the alley and consider having someone look out for you as you get home.

Additionally, phones and iPods have been the target of strong arm robberies – users are walking down the street or riding the train with the volume turned up and they don’t hear anyone coming up behind them! Or when they are texting on their cell phones, they need to be more aware of what is occurring around them. Many times young adults or students will be so busy texting each other, they can’t recall any type of description of the offender(s). Please turn the volume down and be aware of who and what is around you!

Howl-O-Ween 2009 Winners!

[added video  and additional photos link on the bottom of post on 12-19-2009]

It was a bit windy but the sun shone again on this year’s Howl-O-Ween—our fifth year.  Fifty-four dogs were entered in the costume contest—the same as last year. As always, the creativity was amazing.  Emcee Ben Hollis kept things hopping with a lively and humorous commentary.  There were great prizes for the costume contest winners and an abundance of raffle prizes.  It wouldn’t have happened without our volunteers.

A huge thanks to everyone who pitched in—and to our sponsors The Bow Wow Lounge, 1744 W. Winona, and The Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark, and others who contributed cash and fabulous raffle prizes: Andersonville’s Uptown Animal Hospital, 5420 N. Clark, The Barking Lot, 2442 W. Irving Park, Call of the Wild School for Dogs, 3027 N. Rockwell, Famous Fido’s Doggie Deli & Happy Tails, 5430 N. Clark, Painted Light Photos, 1742 W. Balmoral, and Ruff ‘N’ Stuff Pet Center, 5430 N. Clark.  Thanks also to the 1776 W. Winnemac Condo Association for letting us use their lovely park again.

Check out the fun photos taken by our resident photographer Erich Schrempp.

GRAND PRIZE ( $50 and a snazzy dog leash):

“Wizard of Oz Chacacters” with Tabby, a pitbull mix, dressed as a scarecrow; Rodney, a golden retriever mix, dressed as the cowardly lion; and Stella, an Australian Shepherd, dressed as the Tin Man. Owners Katie Battenberg, Erin Anderson and Emily Muller accompanied their pets dressed as Dorothy, Glinda the Good Witch, and the Wicked Witch of the West.
