Hoppy Easter!
It may have been gloomy outside but there were lots of bright faces at the Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by ASNA last Saturday, April 16, at the Bethany Retirement Home, 4950 N. Ashland. Happily there was plenty of space for the event indoors. About 20 kids (and their adults) enjoyed the festivities, which included bunny face painting, crafts, yummy treats, Mr. Hiro, the Japanese toymaker—and, of course, the Bunny Hop led by the Easter Bunny. Check out the fun pictures in the ASNA Photo Gallery. A big thank you to Bethany for hosting us and to all our volunteers, especially the teens from the 20th Police District Youth Explorers Club. What a great group!

Metra project back on track
Construction on the Union Pacific North Line will be starting again this spring. The project was derailed last fall when closing one of the tracks resulted in train scheduling problems and irate commuters. A new plan leaves both tracks open but will cost $40 million more. According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, March 12, the project will replace 22 bridges—some of them more than a century old–in two phases. The first phase, expected to start in late April and last until 2015, will include 11 bridges from Balmoral Avenue to Grace Street. It also includes building a new Ravenswood station at Lawrence Avenue, the most-used stop on the UP North, Metra’s third-busiest line.
Hop on over for Easter fun!

Stay Safe!
Chicago Police are warning of a series of recent armed robberies that have taken place during the early evening hours inside garages just east of our neighborhood. The robbers have entered the garages while the victims were pulling in to park their cars, police said. Be aware of other vehicles in the alley and consider having someone look out for you as you get home.
Additionally, phones and iPods have been the target of strong arm robberies – users are walking down the street or riding the train with the volume turned up and they don’t hear anyone coming up behind them! Or when they are texting on their cell phones, they need to be more aware of what is occurring around them. Many times young adults or students will be so busy texting each other, they can’t recall any type of description of the offender(s). Please turn the volume down and be aware of who and what is around you!

It’s that time again. Alderman Schulter is sponsoring a seminar on filing property tax appeals. Please see details below.

Dear Neighbors,
Last night, over 100 47th Ward residents joined me for a Board of Review workshop with Commissioner Berrios’ staff to discuss how to appeal property tax assessments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents who attended this important meeting. I strongly believe that every property owner in the 47th Ward should submit an appeal to the Board of Review.
As you know, the Cook County Board of Review is now accepting appeals for residents living in the Lakeview Township. In the 47th Ward, all properties located east of Western Avenue are in the Lakeview Township. The deadline to file your appeal with the Board of Review is February 22, 2010. Appeal forms are available at my office. You can also drop off your appeal form to my office by Friday, February 19, 2010 by 5:00 pm.
In collaboration with Commissioner Berrios, I will be sponsoring one more workshop to assist residents in filing their Real Estate Assessed Valuation Complaint Form.

There have been complaints to the Alderman’s office and the 20th District Community Policing Office regarding dogs off leashes at Winnemac Park. Please remind your friends, family and neighbors in the area of the below laws.
A few years ago the alderman’s office surveyed the area about a dog park going into Winnemac Park and the community was against it. As a result, a dog park will be going into Chase Park. You can call 312-742-7518 to get more info.
Here are the official “Laws on Paws” for Chicago:
Responsible pet ownership involves following local laws. Chapter 7-12 of the Chicago Municipal Code governs animal care and control in the City. As a good pet owner and neighbor, here are a couple of key ordinances to keep in mind.
HOLD On TIGHT!
7-12-030: Animals shall be restrained.
Each owner shall keep and maintain his animal under restraint; provided, however, that this section shall not apply to any dog being used for rescue or law enforcement work. It shall be unlawful for any owner to allow his or her animal to cross outside the property line of its owner to any extent, including reaching over or under a fence, or to keep or allow his or her animal to be outdoors on an unfenced portion of the owner’s property, unless the animal is leashed and under the control of its owner or another responsible person. In addition, it shall be an unlawful failure to restrain for an animal to attack, bite, threaten, or jump on any person without that person’s consent, outside the property of the animal’s owner. The provisions of this section shall be a positive duty of the owner and the offenses described herein shall be strict liability offenses.
Any owner who violates any provision of this section shall be subject to a fine of $300.00, if the violation does not result in severe injury or death to any person or damage to another person’s property. If the violation results in severe injury or death to any person, the owner shall be subject to a fine of not less than $1,000.00 and not more than $10,000.00. In addition to a fine, the owner may be required to submit full restitution to the victim or may be incarcerated for a period not to exceed six months, or may be required to perform up to 100 hours of community service, or any combination thereof. If the violation results in damage to another person’s property, the owner shall be subject to a fine of not less than $300.00 and not more than $1,000.00. In addition to a fine, the owner may be required to submit full restitution to the victim. (Prior code § 98-3; Amend Coun. J. 10-2-95, p. 8604; Amend Coun. J. 10-31-01, p. 71774, § 1; Amend Coun. J. 3-31-04, p. 20916, § 3.25)
Remove the Doo!
7-12-420: Removal of Excrement.
No person shall appear with a pet upon the public ways or within public places or upon the property of another, absent that person’s consent, without some means for the removal of excrement; nor shall any person fail to remove any excrement deposited by such pet. This section shall not apply to a blind person while walking his or her guide dog.
Any person found to have been in violation of this section shall be fined not less than $50.00 nor more than $500.00 for each offense. (Prior code § 98-19; Amend Coun. J. 5-14-97, p. 44297)
